Treasure Hill G.C. Stableford

A field of 16 golfers set off to Treasure Hill to blow away the cobwebs following the New Year celebrations. The course has undergone extensive renovations over the past few months, most of which are now completed, and only one temporary tee was still in operation.

There was a stiff breeze blowing as we teed off, which only added to the difficulty of what is always one of the harder courses we play. No one managed to better their handicap on the day, and most agreed that once again the course came out the winner.

The best performance of the day came from newcomer Stephen Roche who showed the old hands how to do it. William Macey scored a creditable 21 points on the back nine (but what happened on the front nine, William?) to take third place on a count- back from the unlucky Reg Smart.

24 golfers today for the visit to the ever popular Bang Chang course, which is excellent value for money following the recent introduction of the group discount. The course was in fine condition and relatively quiet for the time of year, the first group finishing their round comfortably in 4 hours. There were no outstanding scores on the day with both flights being won on 36 points. Ex-Bunker champion, John Hughes had the best score of the day on his first game since returning to Pattaya–we wonder if he’ll be still on form for next month’s championship to try and regain his crown from defending champion Tony Berry.

Bangphra G.C.  Stableford

The largest field of the week turned out to play at Bangphra, and the first group headed off 20 minutes earlier than our allotted tee-time. The course was in excellent condition, but just beginning to show signs of drying up in places. Mashi and William shared the best score of the day on 38 points to win the A and B flights respectively. A monitor lizard made an appearance on the 12th hole, but the star attraction of the day was William scoring 21 points on the front nine (with 2 “blobs”), and sinking two outrageously long putts on the treacherous greens. Mashi continued his run of good form (winning 4 of his last 5 games) to take the honours in the A flight.

Following the recent demise of the Bunker Bar, the Bunker Boys now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. Two boys were killed when a flash flood swept over their village, and weather forecasters are warning of more flood perils to come.

Three-year-old Veerapob Khamroon and his three-month-old brother Siripob were found dead after a flood struck Ban Piang Kok village in Chiang Mai’s Fang district about 9pm on Friday.

The brothers were asleep when the torrent arrived, but their parents could not help them, officials said.

The flood, which came from Doi Fa Hom Pok National Park, destroyed five houses and damaged 40 others.

Doi Fa Hom Pok National Park chief Sitthichai Saereesongsaeng said he sounded the flood warning siren but the deluge came too quickly.

The sound of the waters arriving also drowned out the sound of the alarm.

Mr Sitthichai has warned villagers that another flash flood could hit soon, as rainfall is still falling heavily, and the forest can no longer absorb the water.

Damrong Pidech, chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, yesterday ordered the temporary closure of Doi Fa Hom Pok park, a popular tourist destination in Chiang Mai.

Pakasit Mahasingh, Fang district chief, said soldiers and disaster relief units were clearing the roads, fixing damaged bridges, and building temporary shelters.

Flood have battered 23 provinces and claimed 152 lives over the past two months, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said yesterday.

In Lampang, flash floods ravaged 30 houses in tambon Jae Son of Maung Pan district. No injuries were reported.

In Phichit, the Yom River burst its banks and inundated a lime orchard and riverine communities.

In the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, the Mekong River overflowed into communities in Khong Chiam and Warin Chamrap districts.

Over 500 villagers destroyed a 450m flood wall made of sandbags in Chai Nat’s Wat Sing district.

The villagers said the barrier helps protect neighbouring Suphan Buri province, but it worsens flooding in the district which has been submerged for a month.

The National Disaster Warning Centre yesterday issued a warning of heavy rain and landslides in the North and northeastern region over the next three days.
