Bangkok floods create problems for Pattaya

So many Bangkok residents retreated to Pattaya to escape flood problems in the capital that the resort is being challenged to feed and accommodate those visitors, while locals are deprived of a variety of provisions ranging from bottled water and canned food to dairy products and Mama noodles.

Bangkok shoppers as well as Pattaya residents also are scrambling to stock up on emergency supplies, and many benevolent expats and Thais here are purchasing supplies to donate to flood victims, further emptying store shelves. Some officials have predicted that the deluge may continue for another six to eight weeks.
While Pattaya is not threatened by the watery overspill of the Bangkok floods, the mayhem in and around the capital has prevented trucks and lorries from loading up and distributing essentials. A Pattaya City Hall spokesman observed, “There has been mass buying of some goods in Pattaya to send on to the stranded flood victims north of Bangkok, and the knock-on effect is that Pattaya stores do have some problems.”
But Pattaya Today’s research suggests that hotels, bars and restaurants are keen to have the extra custom as they promise they won’t be running short of booze and meals. “We are fully stocked and ready for the influx of extra visitors,” said a hotelier on Walking Street–one of Pattaya’s premier fun spots. The last weekend in October was a particularly busy one as the government declared a five-day holiday in the inundated areas of the central plains and Bangkok. Traffic in Pattaya and Jomtien was particularly heavy.
